Showa Memorial Park - Spring

Updated: Jan 29

In Tachikawa, Tokyo

Tulip garden at Showa Memorial Park

Showa Memorial Park, located in Tachikawa, spans over 160 hectares, boasting serene lakes, lush forests, and vibrant flower gardens that change with the seasons. It's a favorite destination for both locals and tourists. The park hosts various cultural events and festivals throughout the year, making it a versatile and ever-evolving destination for relaxation and outdoor enjoyment in Tokyo. The park was opened in 1983 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Showa.

My experience

Cherry blossoms

Cherry blossoms

We visited the park this year in early April as it's famous for its Cherry Blossom Garden and Tulip Garden in the spring. Since the weather is a bit colder than central Tokyo, the cherry blossoms bloom a tad bit later. The park is massive and there are so many different flower fields and sections of the park we didn't get to see! I think it's probably one of the largest and probably most beautifully curated parks in Tokyo despite its size. We only had a chance to walk through the cherry blossom and tulip areas, but they even have a little train for people to ride to go around the park!

Cherry blossoms and nanohana

There are several entrances to the park, and it took us maybe 15 minutes to reach the cherry blossom area from our park entrance. We arrived around 14:00 and spent a couple hours here before heading home. There are over 1,500 cherry blossom trees in the park that usually bloom in late March to mid April depending on the year. The park has over 30 different species of cherry blossoms! There were so many people picnicking and enjoying the cherry blossoms in the field. It's a great place to spend the day with family or amongst friends! Nanohana (rapeseed) also blooms in the spring, so they had some fields of nanohana next to the cherry blossoms.

Tulips and the river

My favorite area was probably the tulip gardens with over 200,000 tulips. They were absolutely beautiful! I don't think I've ever seen that many tulips and different types of tulips in my life! I love the way the tulip garden was laid out and how there were sprawling sections of various colors of tulips! Plus the tulips next to the river with the cherry blossom trees made for such a lovely view.

We visited during a weekend and drove from Tokyo, so I will mention that traffic is pretty bad until the Hachioji area, just because there are so many cars and only a few highways that lead out of the city.
