in Roppongi, Tokyo
The Roppongi Museum hosted a Sailor Moon exhibition in honor of the series' 30th anniversary in 2022. It was the largest Sailor Moon exhibition ever held in history. The museum featured various scenes and images from the manga and anime, as well as over 600 collector's items such as figurines, plushies, drawing and costumes. The museum ran from July to December in 2022.
My experience
We went during the first period of the museum that focused on the first and second arcs of the series. Advanced reservations were required, so we booked tickets for a Saturday about a month after the museum opened! Even though we had reserved times, we still needed to wait in line when we arrived as they stagger the entrance to prevent overcrowding.
Sailor Moon Theatre
The first section featured an immersive theatre, showcasing each of the 5 inner sailor scouts and their transformation sticks as well as Sailor Moon's wands.
Holographic Displays
The next section had holographic displays of the manga. This room was so pretty! The holographic sheen on the manga panels were a really nice touch! The next room featured character designs, clips, and storyboards from the Sailor Moon movies.
Sailor Moon Collection
They also had a huge Sailor Moon collection of toys, figurines, accessories, and other rare merchandise that was released throughout the years. This was the largest display of Sailor Moon goods in history.
I absolutely loved Prince Endymion and Princess Serenity's outfits! It was so neat seeing the intricate design up close. The collection section also featured pieces from the Sailor Moon wedding dress line, and costumes from the musicals. I had no idea the musical costumes were so sparkly!
Sailor Crystal Gallery
The next section unfortunately didn't allow any photography, but it featured various original art pieces by Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon!
Ending
At the end of the museum section, they featured special artwork created just for the museum.
Jimmy Choos
They also featured the limited-edition Jimmy Choo boots on display, modeled after Usagi's boots!
Gift Shop
Limited-time merchandise being sold at the gift shop! The shop featured clothing, accessories, stationary and a few home goods items. I ended up splurging and buying the first 10 volumes of the manga!
Sailor Moon Cafe
The museum also featured a cafe that served Sailor Moon inspired dishes. The food was adorable!
Cosmic Heart Compact Raspberry Mousse
This dish featured a cosmic heart compact on top of raspberry mouse with assorted berries and cream. This was so yummy! They sold the cookies individually as well, and I wanted to pick some up before leaving but unfortunately they were all sold out by the time we finished.
I will punish you! Sailor Moon Omurice
The omurice featured Sailor Moon's iconic attack pose, made from powdered sugar, and a crescent moon shaped omurice with a creamy sauce. This was good! The powdered sugar combo with the omurice was definitely a first, but I absolutely loved how it looked on the dish.
Overall I really enjoyed the museum and hope they open up another one again soon!
