Yokohama English Garden

The Yokohama English Garden is located in Yokohama, Kanagawa. The garden boasts over 1,800 roses with over 1,300 different varieties. The roses bloom from late April to August, with the majority of roses in full bloom in May. The garden is split into 6 different gardens each their own themes and color palette. Every spring many people visit to view the roses at Yokohama English Garden.

My Experience

Yokohama English Garden

We visited the Yokohama English Garden this past weekend. I believe they have a bus that goes from Yokohama station, but we ended up just taking a taxi. The nearest station is Hiranumabashi Station, which is about a 10 minute walk from the garden. We were lucky we visited the garden when the roses were pretty much in full bloom and the weather was nice and sunny! There was a lot of people at the garden and the pathways are narrow, so sometimes it can feel crowded and cramped, but it's still less crowded than some of the major tourist spots in Japan. The garden is split into 6 different mini gardens each with their own theme. I think we ended up spending a couple hours just walking around the various paths and seeing all the different types of roses.

The Rose and Grass Garden is focused on unusual colored roses such as gray, bronze, and russet, and features ornamental grasses. The garden's theme is an antique look and many of the roses in this garden have a sweet tea or clove scent.

The Rose and Perennial Garden has a theme of purity and is filled with white roses and perennial plants. There are various shades of white roses in this garden such as pure white, ivory white, white-based colors, and grayish-white.

The Rose and Herb Garden features light pink and mauve colored roses. It has a bright pop theme, featuring herbs and yellow leaves along with the roses. The garden has a fresh herbal scent.

The Rose and Clemantis Garden features dark red and purple roses. The theme is more chic and the garden also contains clemantis and other plants with dark-colored leaves. Many of the roses in this garden give of an old rose scent.

The Rose and Shrub Garden is the largest garden and takes the most time to walk through. The garden features roses of seven different colors, mainly focuses in yellow, orange, and mauve. In the spring, there are 30 varieties of cherry blossoms visitors can enjoy as well as 300 varieties of hydrangeas in late June.

The Tokimeki Garden is only open for a limited time and is a small path featuring various red roses and white plants. You can also see the beautiful garden of the wedding hall next door!
