Poppies at Kurihama Flower Park

Kurihama Flower Park is a large flower park located in Yokosuka, Kanagawa. The park is famous for its various flowers that bloom throughout the year, most noteably poppies during the spring and cosmos in the fall. The park is home to over one million poppies, including Icelandic poppies, California poppies, and shirley poppies, creating a beautiful field of orange, pink, and red. Each year during April to May, people flock to see the poppies at Kurihama Flower Park. The park holds a flower festival and during the last two days, visitors are welcome to pick and take home the poppies for free!

My Experience

Poppies at Kurihama Flower Park

We visited Kurihama Flower Park in the last weekend in May, which was also the last weekend of the flower festival. It surprisingly wasn't very crowded when we visited. Although we had to wait a little bit for the parking lot to open up, there weren't that many people in the poppy fields when we went inside the park. The park is completely free and is open 24 hours. We spent about an hour or so wandering through the poppy field but the entire park is much larger and boasts a beautiful herb garden and other facilities, that we didn't quite get the chance to explore.

Since we visited in the last weekend, we saw many people participating in the poppy picking event. They sectioned off the areas for Saturday and Sunday and which fields were allowed to be picked. We saw many people created lovely bouquets and taking a whole bunch of flowers. I think you need to bring your own supplies though to take home the poppies! There were also mostly just red poppies and a smattering of pink poppies left when we visited. The park also has nemophila which bloom in April, and we did see some remnants of the flowers at the top of the poppy field.

The view from the poppy field is so beautiful! You can see down the fields of poppy and view the city in the distance. The entire fields are surrounding by forest on the sides and top, making it very serene and picturesque. It was very calming walking walking through the paths in the fields and around the fields. I think the fields were a little past their peak when we visited. I think the best to visit is probably early May to see the poppies in full bloom!
