in Akasaka, Tokyo
The Harry Potter Cafe is located right near the Akasaka ACT Theatre in Akasaka, which currently features the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play. The station itself is decorated with Harry Potter motifs, including a large time-turner statue in the center of the stairs leading up to the theatre, and house banners hanging on the buildings outside! Apart from the cafe and stage play, there is also a small gift shop, Harry Potter Mahodokoro, selling official merchandise in the plaza. The cafe and its dishes are all Harry Potter inspired, with enchanting decor and a menu featuring a delightful array of themed dishes and beverages, allowing you to savor the flavors of the wizarding world!
My experience
We visited the cafe earlier this year on a Saturday afternoon. The cafe requires you to make reservations in advance online. From you moment you exit the ticket gate, Akasaka station is decked out in Harry Potter decorations and motifs! You can even see some scenes and promos playing in small screens around the station.
The cafe and the theatre are right next to the station, so you don't have to walk very far! The interior of the cafe features a large decorative wand hanging from the ceiling as well as various portraits on the walls. You have a time limit of 100 minutes in the cafe and can order menu items as well as any souvenirs from the tablet on your table.
We ordered the Ravenclaw Hogwarts Cheese Toastie, Dragon's Breath Roast Beef, Eton Mess Goblet, and the Expecto Patronum and Wingardium Leviosa mocktails.
Ravenclaw Hogwarts Cheese Toastie
The Ravenclaw House Toastie is one of four toasties inspired by each of the Hogwarts houses. The toastie is a toasted cheese sandwich. The Ravenclaw toastie had mushroom and chicken inside. The sandwich was good, but I think it could've used a tad more seasoning. The Gryffindor toastie has a beef and onion filling, the Slytherin toastie has a salmon and spinach filling, and the Hufflepuff toastie has a bacon and onion filling. Each of the dish also comes with a bowl of soup and some pickles. I really enjoyed the soup! I think it was pumpkin. It was so creamy and buttery!
Dragon Smoke Roast Beef
This dish came with roast beef, a popover, mashed potatoes, and sauerkraut. The roast beef was quite good! The meat was tender and the sauce was tasty.
Eton Mess Goblet
This dessert was a lot bigger than I thought it'd be! The dish is a mixture of strawberries, fudge, raspberry sorbet and cookies, topped with a roasted marshmallow coating and a decorative blue sugar candy, to resemble to the goblet of fire (or at least that's what I think the motif was)! It was good! It was a lot of filling though, so it's probably best to split this between at least 2 people.
Expecto Patronum Mocktail
This drink was so cool! I loved the deep blue (patronus) color and the liquid nitrogen bubble! There was also a lychee fruit inside. The drink tasted like a fruity lychee mix. Not bad!
Wingardium Leviosa Mocktail
This mocktail came in such a neat glass. The glass was a two-piece container with feathers in the bottom glass as homage to the iconic scene with Hermione and Ron! The drink had apples and bits of pomegranate inside. I expected it to taste more like juice, but it surprisingly had a very floral flavor!
They also had a small gift shop featuring various Harry Potter themed dishware inside the cafe. Overall the Harry Potter Cafe is a great getaway to experience a little bit of magic in the middle of Tokyo!
