Cherry Blossoms at Oyama Park

Oyama Park is located in Matsuura City in Nagasaki. It is a popular place for cherry blossoms in the spring. The cherry blossoms in Oyama Park line the hill on Fukushima island just off the coast of Nagasaki. The island is connected by Ohashi bridge and the park has an observation deck where you can see the dozens of small islands in Imari Bay. The hill is covered with over 500 cherry blossoms trees and the park is illuminated at night. There are also around 40 cherry trees that are a special variety that bloom in the fall!

My Experience

Cherry Blossoms at Oyama Park

We visited Oyama Park in the beginning of April at the end of the cherry blossom season. Unfortunately many of the petals had already fallen when we visited, but the weather was so nice and the view was absolutely stunning. We drove from Fukuoka and it was only a little over an hour drive away. It's located at the north east of Nagasaki, just near the border of Saga prefecture. The road was mostly a two lane road to get there through the countryside but the drive was so nice and peaceful!

To get to Oyama Park, we drove up the hill on Fukushima island. We visited in the morning and past the peak of cherry blossom season so it wasn't crowded at all! It was so serene and picturesque walking through the winding paths in the park. They have a small observatory you can climb up to see a stunning view of the bay and islands. I'm sure the area looks even more beautiful when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom!

We spent about an hour walking through the park. There are various small trails on the side of the hill you can walk down, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to walk all the way down to the bottom. The forest path seriously reminded me of the scene in the Ghibli film Spirited Away! The area was so peaceful and the scenery was very gorgeous. There were a lot of bumblebees buzzing around so we did have to watch where we walked though!
