Azaleas at Kasama Tsutsuji Park

Azaleas at Kasama Tsutsuji Park

Kasama Tsutusji Park is a park located on a hill in Kasama, Ibaraki. Kasama is located on the border of Ibaraki prefecture. It is particularly famous for its pottery during the Edo and Meiji periods. The park is home to over 8,500 azalea bushes with 25 different varieties covering over 7 hectacres. The hill is about 143 meters and offers a beautiful view of Kasama city. During late-April to early-May many people travel to see the Azaleas at Kasama Tsutsuji Park.

My Experience

Azaleas at Kasama Tsutsuji Park

We visited Kasama Tsutsuji Park the first weekend of golden week in the afternoon. The park has a few parking lots you can park at. However, by the time we got there the ones nearest to the park were already full, so we were guided to the parking lot at the bottom of the hill. We probably visited during the crowdest period of the year, although it definitely wasn't as crowded as some of the other spots we visited during golden week! It took us about 15 minutes to walk from the bottom of the hill to the park entrance.

The park itself is situated on top of a hill with winding paths and azaleas covering the hillside. It takes about another 10 - 15 minutes to walk from the park entrance to the top of the hill. At the top of the hill, they have a lookout point, a couple food stalls, and a few benches and tables to sit at! The view from the top is absolutely gorgeous! We could see the thousands of azalea from the top as well as the city and mountains in the background.

I will say that it was quite sunny and warm the day we visited, so we probably should've put on more sunscreen. I ended up getting a bit of the sunburn on my arms that day! I think we spent around 1 - 2 hours walking up and down the hill seeing the various azaleas. The path of the parks mostly aren't paved and there are a lot of dirt stairways, so I would wear comfortable shoes when visiting!
